Free vocabulary crossword maker
Type or paste a word list, add a clue for each word if you like, and get a crossword you can print or hand out as a link. It works with your own vocabulary lists, or with the built-in CEFR A1 and A2 lists if you need words fast.
How it works
- Choose your words. Paste your own list, one word per line, with a clue after a dash (
apple - a round red or green fruit). You can also pick a CEFR A1 or A2 topic. - Choose the level of support. Add a word bank, show letter counts after the clues, or give clues only.
- Print or share. Print on A4 or Letter or save as PDF, with the answer key on its own page. You can also send students a link to solve it on screen.
Built-in word lists
- CEFR A1 vocabulary: 623 words in everyday topics, with short English definitions as clues.
- CEFR A2 vocabulary: 637 words, the next step up.
- CEFR B1 (nouns): 469 B1 nouns by topic, in the tool. B1 verbs and adjectives are not included yet.
- Taiwan junior-high 2,000-word list, with Chinese clues.
Lists in other languages keep their accents and special letters, one letter per square.
FAQ
Is it free?
Yes. Making, printing and sharing crosswords is free. Printed sheets carry a small “Made with Crossword Maker” line in the footer.
Do I need an account?
No. Open the page and start typing.
Can students do it on a computer or tablet?
Yes. Copy the share link and send it to your class. Anyone with the link can also open the answers, so use it for practice rather than for graded tests.
Can I make two versions of the same puzzle?
Yes. Press “New layout” for a new arrangement of the same words, and print each version.
What happens to the words I type?
Nothing leaves your browser except the share link you choose to create. We only count anonymous usage.
A word didn’t fit. What now?
The tool lists any words it could not place. Press “New layout”, or add a word or two that share letters with it.
